Animal bones

An imposing number of animal remains, referable to the remains of meals, were found in the layers accumulated through the probable abandon of some areas of the Sant’Eulalia district during the VI century.

Analyses performed on the bone fragments ascertained the presence and consumption of farm animals, such as sheep and goats (mostly - fig. 2), cows (fig. 1), horses, pigs and chickens (fig. 3); also, to a much lesser extent, the remains of game and shell fish.

This latter group includes a consistent presence of the shells of ostrea edulis, oyster (fig. 4), proving the close relationship with the sea.

The analyses made it possible to determine species, age and feeding of animals and deduce the relationship developed in the Late Antiquity between them and humans.

Study of the bones enabled experts to group the findings into two large groups: remains of slaughtering and craft fragments. In fact, at Sant’Eulalia animal bones are certified as being used to create common objects such as hairpins and dame pieces.
