The stelae from the tophet

The ‘field of urns’, the place where the ashes of children or animals “passed through the fire” were placed, had, in addition to the amphoras, stone stelae with the image of sacellum or tabernacles that referred to several types of temple (figs. 1-2).

At the end of the nineteenth century, the discovery of the some stelae on the plain showed the existence of a settlement on Monte Sirai. There are simple, linear types, but also more elaborate ones, in Egyptian style (figs. 3-5). Greek-style stelae are rather rare, which are more widespread elsewhere, like in nearby Sulky (Sant’Antioco). The main decorations are representations of people.

Overall, the stelae from Monte Sirai - a total of almost a hundred have been found - are closely related to part of the production from Sulky (Sant’Antioco).
