The facies of San Michele of Ozieri in Li Muri

The relationship between the Late Neolithic Sardinian Culture of San Michele of Ozieri (3200-2850 B.C.) and the Culture of Gallura concerning megalithic circles is still under discussion these days, even more so after the discovery of the similar monumental complex of Pranu Muttedu in Goni (figs. 1, 2).

The funerary architecture typical of the Culture of Ozieri, identified by the domus de janas, the subterranean tombs typical of the Sardinian pre-Nuraghic period which correspond to simple or complex man-made caves carved into the local stone, does not exist in the necropolis of Li Muri Gallura and in almost all of Gallura,.

The absence of this funerary model is perhaps motivated by the greater propensity of the area of Gallura towards the Western European megalithic circuit (fig. 3).

Even the artefacts typical of the Culture of Ozieri, except for some apple-shaped spheroids in green soapstone (fig. 4), cannot be compared with those found in the necropolis of Li Muri, although materials decorated in the typical syntax of Ozieri, both from residential and burial sites, have well documented the spread of this culture even in Gallura.

The absence of materials belonging to it in the circles of Li Muri therefore seems to have no other satisfactory explanation than that of their belonging to a different cultural environment.
