The Church of San Lorenzo in Rebeccu
The Romanesque church of San Lorenzo (figs. 1, 2) stands about 6 km from the town of Bonorva, a short distance from the domus de janas necropolis of S. Andrea Priu and next to the village of Rebeccu, which, according to tradition, it was the parish church.
The small building, built in Romanesque style, in the second half of the 12th century A.D., has a single room, with its apse facing east. The walls were built in limestone (white) and with basalt ashlars (black) that highlight the two-tone work (fig. 3).
The facade ends with a bell-gable (fig. 4) while the door has a lunette mounted over the architrave. Along the base of the sloping roofs, there are five arches set on corbels. A light in the shape of a cross lights up the main front and rear ones.
There are two tall, narrow windows (single lancet) on the north side of the building, identical to the ones in the apse (fig. 5).
In the 19th century, the church was in ruins and in 1831, it was partly demolished to take materials for the construction of the parish church of Rebeccu. The wooden roof and south wall of the building were rebuilt only in 1982. The northern side, the facade and the apse are the original ones.
