The frescoes
The interior walls of the church of San Nicola di Trullas still have fragments of frescoes in the apse, along the apsidal vault and arch (fig. 1), on the surface of the two cross vaults (figs. 2-3) and on the arches on the side walls, the apse wall and the counterfacade. Other parts of paintings are found along the base of the apse wall and along the side walls. These fragments allow us to state that originally the decoration extended along the entire internal wall surface, as was usual in medieval buildings. Thanks to the comparison carried out with other painting cycles, it was possible to trace these paintings to Roman and Lazio production of the early decades of the 13th century, even if further comparisons allow these paintings to be traced to a Mediterranean cultural context.
