The Village

Documents dating back to the fourteenth century evidence that the village of Posada was a separate entity from the Castello della Fava (fig. 1). It could maybe be identified as the district of Santa Caterina (fig. 2), located to the west compared with the castle. Sometimes news of the occasional discovery of archaeological material occurs in this area, however, more reliable hypotheses can only be made only after careful scientific investigation. From here, the village of Posada was transferred to the foot of the hill on which the Castle stands, probably between the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, in order to escape the pirates which raided along the coast (figs. 3-4). There were several parish churches in the ancient village of Posada, as is attested by various ancient sources. The existence of these religious buildings proves the ancient division into districts (separated from each other, according to the outline of a village in clusters) of the old village of Posada.
