Items from the chamber tombs

The items from the Monte Sirai chamber tombs (figs. 1-2) are a reflection of the new Carthage phase, with the formal presence of elements from earlier Phoenician phases and the presence of Greek ceramics from Athens, part of renewed Mediterranean relations.

During the 5th century, there were still jugs with wide horizontal brims, known as “mushroom” brims. The red paint, or engobe, tends to be abandoned. The presence of other jugs of several types and painted decorations are from longer periods of time. There are several other types of ceramics, of many variations, such as amphoras, plates and cups (figs. 3-5). The small ornamental items, and superstitious items, such as scarabs, also have a long, developed documentation (fig. 5).
