Korakodes Portus

According to historical and geographical sources, the ancient town of Cornus was served by a port called Korakodes portus or Korakodes limen, whose location is still in doubt (fig. 1).

The habitat does not seem to be mentioned amongst the sea or port towns. Its position immediately inland did not enable it to have trade as its main activity; though goods were imported exploiting a port not far away. Based on the Geography of Claudius Ptolemy (II A.D.), it is assumed that Korakodes Portus was at Cala Su Pallosu, in Capo Mannu (fig. 2), 5 nautical miles (about 9 km) from Cornus. Korakodes was possibly where the Punic fleet that came to help Ampsicora landed during the revolt against the Romans in 215 B.C.,  and, if that were in the area of Capo Mannu, the distance from the rebels' headquarters, Cornus, would not have been far for Hasdrubal's army.

The port used by the Roman town had to be reached by mostly cargo ships whose goods would have been sold in the neighbouring area. The merchant activity is documented by both wrecks found on the seabed and some pictures of ships (fig. 3).
