Nuragic bronze statue of a boxer (Gonone)

The bronze votive statuette (size: h. 13.1 cm; width 3,5 cm; depth 6 cm) was found in 1947 in Gonone di Dorgali (figs. 1, 2).

The figure, made with the lost wax technique, is supposed to be a boxer. He is dressed in a short, triangular-tailed skirt, sewn at the back, that is wrapped around the waist. The figure has a long shield on his head, probably made from leather with a wooden frame, with a folded age; he is wearing a glove around his hand, and have his right-hand forearm raised and bent.
The artefact, dated to the X-VII centuries B.C., is on display at the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.
The category of boxers, that can be traced to rituals that took place in sacred places, where sacred games were also planned, was reproduced in most of the stone Nuragic statues in Mont’e Prama di Cabras (fig. 3).
An intact example of bronze boxer was found in the Cavalupo Tomb in Vulci, dated to the second half of the 9th century and another was found in the Grotta del Carmelo in Ozieri.
