The exedra of the tomb site of Thomes

The giants' tombs are grand collective funerary monuments exclusively found in Nuraghic Sardinia, whose site diagram seems to recall a bull's head: the emblem of prehistoric Sardinian religion from as far back as the Neolithic Age. They consist in fact of a long burial chamber, whose terminal part of the outer wall is curved, with an arched front which extends laterally into two wings which delimit an area called exedra or ceremonial area, as within its perimeter the funerary rituals probably took place.

The front of the funerary monument of S’Ena 'e Thomes (fig. 1) has a semi-circular orthostat type exedra.

It consists of a series of slabs which decreases in height starting from the central one (fig.2).

The central pillar coincides with the entrance and with the curved stele formed by a large monolithic slab characterised by an arched upper profile and a lower pane separated by a horizontal listel (fig. 3).

The long bench consisting of several side by side blocks which follows the profile of the exedra with the double function of holding up the orthostats and of constituting a point for laying offerings to the deceased, is not present. It has a 10.20 metre chord and a 4.20 metre sagitta.
