Apple-shaped spheroids (Li Muri)

These apple-shaped spheroids found in the circle tombs in the necropolis of Li Muri have a spherical shape, with a smooth, perforated surface. They are made of blue and green soapstone and granite (figs. 1, 2, 3, 4).

Their intended use cannot be defined with certainty at the moment.

The analysis of the artefacts leads us to consider them as objects indicating a sign of power; on the other hand, the central hole gives the assumption of the presence of a handle made of a perishable material which has not reached us, linked to a rotary type of movement.

Within the Sardinian territory, some apple-shaped spheroids in green soapstone can be compared with those found in the funerary area of Pranu Muttedu (Goni) from the Late Neolithic-Copper Ages.

It is believed that the apple-shaped spheroids from the necropolis of Li Muri were imported from Crete.

In the eastern area, similar artefacts were in fact found in the island of Crete, in Anatolia and in Egypt.

The apple-shaped spheroids found in the necropolis of Li Muri are kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.
