Askoid jugs
In the Final Bronze Age (1150-900 B.C.) the Askoid pitcher was created and became popular in domestic environments, places of worship and meetings. This is a container widely used throughout the island, for sacred ceremonies (worship of water, libations) and drinking, used to pour liquids, with an oblique neck and a single bridge handle, sometimes with a lip.
An Askoid pitcher, with a smooth, shiny surface, wide neck, oblique lip and flat bottom, was found in room 141 in the village of Su Nuraxi in Barumini. The handle stretches from the rim to the oval body, at its widest point (figs. 1, 2).
The Askoid pitcher found in room beta of Su Nuraxi (9th-8th century B.C.) also has an oval body, separate round neck, oblique rim, and a thin handle from the neck to the shoulder, with a flat bottom (figs. 3, 4).
Hut 135 has returned another Askoid pitcher, with an oblique rim and eccentric neck, with a round body and flat bottom. There is a decorative band at the bottom of the neck, with engraved patterns (figs. 5, 6).
The artefacts are currently on show at Casa Zapata in Barumini.
