Arzachena during Roman Times: the station of Turublum Minus
The identification near Arzachena of a Roman statio along the coast road which started in Portus Tibulas, known as Turublum Minus, also indicated in the Antonine Itinerary of the third century A.D., that is a type of road map from the Roman-Imperial period, is still not certain, in fact the same name, due to a clerical error, could refer instead to Trinita d'Agultu-Vignola, Tibula Minus (fig. 1).
The name, whose meaning is still uncertain, suggests the presence of an alleged Turublum Maius, still located in the territory of Arzachena, in Nicola Calta, where the name Tùvulu Maggiori still remains today (figs. 2, 3).
The events of the territory of Arzachena during Roman times are not well known.
The few elements of cultural material discovered to date have mostly been found in the most important Nuraghic sites. A ceramic fragment from Roman times was found in the heavy layer of collapse of room n in Nuraghe Albucciu.
Ceramic fragments from Roman times have been reported in hut I and trench A of the Nuraghic complex of La Prisgiona. Prehistoric tombs have been surveyed in the tafoni in Malchittu, which were then re-used during the Roman phase. In 2001, in the territorial waters of Arzachena, about 20 metres deep, sixteen copper ingots were recovered dating back to the period of Roman rule.
The presence of Roman artefacts, because of their characteristics and quantity, would suggest that these objects refer to the exchange relations between the local population with Romanised society rather than to a phase of Roman attendance of the above-mentioned Nuraghic sites.
