The monastery

To the right of the church of San Nicola di Trullas, on the south side, there was a monastery, that one housed a large community of monks. It has a large open air courtyard surrounded by covered corridors, onto which rooms on two floors opened up (fig. 1-4). On the ground floor, there must have been storerooms, kitchens, the refectory and the capitular room, the place where most of the monks’ gatherings took place. The upper floor must have housed the monks’ cells and probably the library. There was a well at the centre of the courtyard that guaranteed water supply to the monastery. The monastery was destroyed by a fire around the mid 14th century and then abandoned, while the church continued to be used.
