The bell tower
The church of San Nicola must also have had a bell tower, but archaeologists have not yet found results of this from the digs carried out. Some rooms have been found in the eastern part of the monastery that may refer to the bell tower, perhaps destroyed by the fire that spread through the monastery around the mid 14th century (figs. 1-4). The bell tower must have been tower shaped and had one or two bells, that announced the various moments of the day with their ringing, not just for the monks but also for those who lived close to the monastery.
