The apse

The small church of San Nicola di Trullas has a very simple structure: it is a parallelepiped shape, with a semi-circular structure jutting out to the east, known as the apse (figs. 1-2). Like in the past, the apse is the most important part of a church, as it is where the sacred functions of worship are carried out. Externally, the surface area of the apse in the church of San Nicola is divided into two pars by a vertical elements known as a pilaster, and there is a single-light window in each portion, that provides lighting to the interior (figs. 3-4). There are a number of small arches on the wall in the top part, also at the top of the wall, and in the high part of the two side walls of the church.
